Middleboro: Fatal hit-and-run suspect indicted

An 18 year old Middleboro man has been indicted on charges of motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of an accident after causing personal injury resulting in death.
Eric Megna was indicted this week in connection with the hit and run death of 58 year old Michael Dutra of Middleboro.
Prosecutors allege that mMegna was behind the wheel of the SUV that struck Dutra who was riding a bike, on Wood Street on October 11th, 2013.
They also allege he fled the scene, and then reportedly tried to cover up the incident.
At his initial arraignment, Assistant District Attorney Matthew Libby says Megna said the damage to his vehicle happened when he struck a deer in New Hampshire.
“Investigators have determined that Mr. Megna made up an elaborate scheme to cover up his actions,” Libby said. “The picture that he sends to his mother of a dead deer–it turns out that it was not a deer that he took a photograph of- but rather a deer that was pulled off the internet.”
Megna, a UMass freshman, pleaded not guilty at the district court arraignment.
Megna’s Superior Court arraignment is scheduled for January 22.
