Carver Board of Selectmen has voted to make the addition of resources to combat the drug problem in town a priority goal in the FY15 budget process.
Town Administrator Michael Milanoski said there is a slight budget overage for the Police Department this current fiscal year.
“The chief has been authorized to spend some additional overtime and manpower to help combat some of the drug issues that we have in Carver,” Milanoski said, “We’ve teamed up with Boston Police Department as well as other surrounding different departments and the Sheriff’s Department to do some major large scale arrests in town.”
Milanoski added it has required additional funds to do this and put together intelligence and surveillance . “We’re watching them,” he said.
Milanoski recognized that there is a desire to add several positions to the department in the future: a detective, a resource officer, and a family support service.
Selectmen Vice Chair Jack Franey said he believes the new positions would benefit the whole town. “It [would be] money well spent,” he said.
Selectman Dick Ward attended a meeting in town last week set up by the School Committee to find out how much town concern exists for this problem.
“There was a lot of interest, probably 90 or more people there,” Ward said, “The drug problem is a community problem, which means it isn’t just law enforcement. It’s educating young kids, it’s educating older kids, [and] it’s finding a place for kids that have had the problem.”
Ward added that there will be a follow-up meeting the first week in March. He acknowledged that the town does not have a choice but to address this problem.
Selectman Helen Marrone recognized that the role of local government is to protect the town and the community.
Selectmen Chair Michael O’Donnell pointed out that after two deaths in January from heroin overdoses, this issue should rise to the top of the priority list.
Milanoski hopes that everyone in the community wants to do something to “slow down” this drug problem in town.
