Hingham: Businesses told to watch out for ‘funny money’

Hingham police are warning local businesses to be on guard, after two merchants unwittingly received a total of three counterfeit $20 bills last Tuesday.

One business was on Whiting St.-Rte. 53 and the other was at the Derby St. Shoppes plaza.

Police tell WATD the bills appeared very textured,  were a darker green, and had a slightly different feel than a genuine bill.

The fake money also did not have a band visible inside the bill and did not have a hologram, and when checked with an over-the-counter counterfeit pen, the bills did not leave the correct color marking.

So far, no suspects have been identified.

The Secret Service  is aiding the investigation.
