Middleboro: Budget dispute between the schools and town financial officials

Middleboro financial officials have 2 weeks to settle a budget dispute with the schools or face a floor fight at the May 24 town meeting. Selectmen slashed the proposed School Department budget from $31.4 million to $30.7 million.

Brian Giovanoni declined to say if the school board will attempt to amend the budget and ask for more money. He was the only School Committee member who voted against the larger budget because he said he feared it could not be sustained. Town Manager Charles Cristello shortfunded two accounts in order to give the schools an additional $300,000 and keep a balanced budget of $73.4 million. Town meeting will vote on the budget on May 24.
