Alton, NH: E. Bridgewater man involved in boat accident on Lake Winnipesaukee

A motorboat operated by South Shore man collided with a canoe on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire on Friday afternoon.

New Hampshire Marine Patrol Sgt. Crystal McLain told WATD that a 911 caller stated that the 20-foot boat had struck the canoe between Rattlesnake and Sleepers Islands shortly after 3:30 p.m.

Marine Patrol arrived on-scene to find everyone out of the water.

McLain said the preliminary investigation reveals that 74-year-old Robert Johnson of East Bridgewater was heading east on the lake at about 30 miles-an-hour when his boat collided with the 15-foot canoe.

A man identified as 50-year-old Robert Cavallaro of Driggs, ID saw that the crash was imminent and managed to jump out of the canoe just before impact.

McLain said that charges are pending, though alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
