Kingston: Harbormaster’s new boat named the ‘Independence’

The Kingston Harbormaster’s boat naming contest results are in, and the winning name is the “Independence.”

The Board of Selectmen voted on the name at their meeting Tuesday night, choosing from a list of many suggestions.

“The boat that the Harbormaster’s been using for over 20 years is no longer in service,” Elaine Fiore, Selectmen Chair said, “Town Meeting approved to purchase a brand new boat, so we thought it would be interesting to have a contest to name the new boat.”

Some of the names considered were: the Jones Rescue, The Bradford, Kingston Keel, North Precinct, etc.

Three residents submitted the name “Independence,” and will receive the contest “prize.”

“They get a ride around Kingston Bay on the brand new boat,” Fiore said. She added that each winner can bring as many guests as will “fit in the boat” for their ride.

Town Administrator Robert Fennessy said the boat is due in around July, 17.
