Scituate: Lifeguards receive town commendations for saving lives

Two Scituate lifeguards have received commendations from the town’s Board of Selectmen, for saving the lives of two children on Egypt Beach a few weeks ago.

20 year old lifeguard Ryan MacKinnon rushed into the ocean to save two 3 and 4 year old children, whose mom fell asleep on the beach.

But through it all, Ryan remains a humble hero.

“My co-worker that’s not here noticed two kids struggling in the water. I went in and just picked them up. It wasn’t anything special, but, you know, everyone that we work with does their job so, it’s what we’re there to do I guess,” Ryan said.

21 year old lifeguard Shawna Cochran also helped out and described the events a little bit differently than Ryan.

“There were two kids and it was low tide. There’s a bit of a drop off on the right side of Egypt Beach, and Ryan noticed that they were no longer playing and that they seemed to be struggling. We blew the whistle and activated an emergency, and he went in and saved both the kids at the same time, by picking them up and walking them to shore. So, he did two saves at one time which is pretty great, and brought them to shore and made sure that they were ok, and they were breathing.

I took their hands and walked them to try to find their mom. She was sleeping.”

Shawna said she had to wake up the sleeping and unappreciative mom and inform her that her kids had been just been saved from drowning.
