Brockton: Trial of Middleboro man accused of murder gets underway

The murder trial against Nicholas Pilalas of Middleboro is set to begin Tuesday in Brockton Superior Court.

Pilalas is accused of killing 20-year-old Dalton Goulart when a chance meeting escalated out of control just after midnight on Nov. 6, 2011.

Court records say Pilalas came upon Goulart and a group of friends who were out walking a short distance from his home. Pilalas confronted the group and when another car stopped things went from bad to worse. By all accounts Goulart was the peace maker in the melee, but was fatally stabbed when the second car stopped.

As Goulart was bleeding to death police found Pilalas parked in his car with the murder weapon about a half mile from the scene.

Jack Atwood, who is defending Pilalas, said his client is pleading not guilty. Atwood said jury selection will begin today and he expects the trial to last 5 or 6 days.
