January 15, 2015 ~ This week it’s off to the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula where desert meets the pacific ocean and the sea of Cortez ~ Los Cabos San Lucas, Mexico, arguably the most popular world class golf travel destination in the world this winter season with the opening in December 2014 of two of Cabo’s newest golf courses, the Jack Nicklaus designed Quivera Golf Course and the Tiger Woods designed El Cardinal at Diamante.
Los Cabos, located at the tip of the 1,000-mile long Baja Peninsula is revered for its consistently sunny weather and unique mountain, ocean and desert ecosystem. Los Cabos is also home to 14 award-winning golf courses, world class resorts and spas and sport fishing. This exotic escape is within easy reach of most U.S. and Canadian cities.
December 4, 2014 ~ Dignitaries, resort executives, international media and property owners gathered for an official opening ceremony of The Quivira Golf Club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course, followed by a ceremonial tee off on the 12th hole with Ernesto Coppel Kelly, owner and developer of Quivira and Pueblo Bonito Resorts and Spas; Marcos Alberto Covarrubias Villasenor, Governor of the State of Baja California Sur; and Jack Nicklaus. Quivira marks Nicklaus’ sixth course design in Los Cabos and his twenty-third overall in Mexico.
Quivira (pronounced key-vee-ra), is a luxury residential resort community situated at Land’s End on the Baja Peninsula, with more than three miles of pristine golden beaches, picturesque desert cliffs and panoramic ocean views. This exclusive 1,850-acre master-planned community was founded by renowned resort developer Ernesto Coppel.
Marked by huge windswept dunes, sheer granite cliffs and rolling desert foothills 10 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas, Quivira features stunning panoramas and sharp drops from tee to fairway and offers golfers more oceanfront exposure than any other course in Los Cabos ~ all 18 holes feature panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, which swells with breaching whales during the winter months.
“This is one of the great pieces of property in the world,” Nicklaus said. “We tried to create some excitement on the mountain and in the dunes, and I believe we’ve created a golf course that plays as spectacular as it looks.”
Completing the experience at Quivira Golf Club is a stylish, thatched-roof clubhouse between the first tee and 18th green that offers a large rectangular bar, a casual steakhouse, and ample outdoor seating overlooking the sea. Beside the clubhouse is a spacious double-ended practice facility that parallels the ocean, as well as an elongated practice putting green and an expanded short-game practice area.
Quivira Golf Club is accessible to guests of the four Pueblo Bonito Oceanfront Resorts and Spas in Los Cabos, and to owners of properties in Copala, Montecristo Estates Luxury Villas, and Novaispania Residences.
Cabo’s residential community of Diamante formally unveiled El Cardonal on December 16, 2014 with a gala opening ceremony. Many dignitaries as well as course designer Tiger Woods were on hand. El Cardonal marks Tiger’s debut as a golf course architect. “I’ve always wanted to be in the golf design business,” said Woods. “This is an incredible site, and working with (Diamante developer) Ken Jowdy and his team has been absolutely phenomenal.”
El Cardonal was designed to accommodate a wide range of golfers. According to Jowdy, “He (Woods) focused more on the people he plays with on Wednesdays (the amateurs in the pro-ams) than on the weekend (the pros).”
Byron Bell, president of Woods’ design company, said “Tiger grew up playing some of the great, old-style courses on the West Coast. Bunkers and other hazards were used not as a deterrent, but instead to force players to make a decision. Tiger wants the variety of holes and strategic options to promote shot-making while still creating a very playable experience.”
“I expect that everyone, moms, dads and kids—will all play basically the same ‘lines’ on each hole,” said Tiger. “We’ve given them different tee boxes, but the strategy is the same for everyone. The idea was to make it fun for all types of players.”
“With all the amenities here at the resort, I plan on spending more time here at Diamante,” Woods said, adding that “Cabo delivers what everyone is looking for. It’s the best of all worlds. You’ve got great golf, plus all the activities available offshore, including incredible fishing and diving. You don’t find too many places like this in the world—ever.” Tiger plans to build a second course at Diamante in the future.
