A routine traffic stop Friday morning around 8:30 a.m. in Pembroke turned into a brief chase and three-car crash on Route 139, near the Route 3 overpass.

The vehicle Pembroke Police were attempting pull over — for a registration plate infraction — instead sped off and went through a red light at the intersection of Church St., Route 139 and the Rt. 3 southbound off-ramp.

According to police, the vehicle then struck another vehicle in traffic, continued eastbound on Rt. 139 and crashed into a second vehicle, before finally coming to a stop — behind a guardrail.

The operator of the vehicle then fled into the woods on foot. Following a brief foot chase, the driver, identified as 28-year-old Claudio Araujo, of Baldwin Rd., Brockton, was apprehended and arrested by police.

The driver of the 2nd vehicle struck was injured in the crash; they were treated on scene by the Pembroke Fire Department and then transported to BID-Plymouth by ambulance with minor injuries.

Araujo will be arraigned at Plymouth District Court and is charged with the following: Failure to Stop for Police Officer, Driving to Endanger, Suspended License, Leaving the Scene after Personal Injury, Leaving the Scene after Property Damage, Improper Display of Plate, and Attaching Plates.
