Plymouth: Maritime Facility to Replace Harbor Master’s Office

In Plymouth, a new Maritime Facility will replace the Harbor Master’s office. Harbor Master Chad Hunter says the reason for calling the new structure a Maritime Facility is because there are three components to the building:

“There’s going to be public restrooms, transient boating facilities, which will include restrooms, showers, small scale laundry for people visiting Plymouth by boat and then, also the Harbor Master office will be included in that.”

And one of the requirements because of FEMA floodmap changes, is the building must be elevated:

“So, it’s going to be on piles. We were just reminded with storm Greyson that that area does flood. So we’re building it–really building it up off the ground so if there’s any flooding or wave action that goes through that lot, it’s going to be going under the building –not into the building.”

The current Harbor Master’s building is in poor shape:

“We lack running water most of the year. We don’t have a bathroom facility. This building is not handicapped accessible. A few years back, a Town Meeting approved Facility Assessment study recommended that the town rebuild the facility. The Planning Board okay-ed the new proposal this week and it goes to the Zoning Board of Appeals on January 17th.”
