MA: Grassroots Organization Advocating for Changes in Voter Registration

One grassroots organization is advocating for a change in the way state voters are registered.

Co-Chair of the Issues Committee of Progressive Massachusetts Jonathan Cohn defines Automatic Voter Registration:

Cohn also shares the benefits of Automatic Voter Registration over the state’s current registration process:

11 states currently use Automatic Voter Registration, also including Washington, D.C.

There are currently two bills in Massachusetts–House Bill 2091 and Senate Bill 373–that are circulating in support of Automatic Voter Registration. The Senate Bill is being sponsored by Senator Cynthia Creem, and the House Bill was sponsored by the late State Rep. Peter Kocot. Rep. Thomas Calter also supports Automatic Voter Registration.

If these bills pass, this voting process could be implemented statewide by 2019-2020.
