Students from Blue Hills Regional Technical School who fought for the right to wear military sashes at their graduation ceremony, proudly displayed those sashes at graduation Tuesday night.

Eight grads joining the military won their fight against the school district, despite dress code guidelines to the contrary.

John Broderick is enlisting in the Navy and proudly displayed his Navy sash on stage.

“It’s an honor, it’s a privilege, it’s a right in my opinion – it’s my first amendment right. Not many people are allowed to do it, so to be able to stand up to an administration that’s isn’t allowing us to do it, it’s incredible. It feels amazing!” John said.

Just last week John, with others in the group appeared before the school committee and school superintendent to plead their case, with school superintendent ruling in their favor.

“It’s not a rule. It’s not a policy. After having a discussion with them (the administration) it’s ok and we were able to wear the sashes like I’ve done so, and I couldn’t be happier,” John explained.

Student Hannah Ryan also submitted a petition with over 3,400 signatures backing the student’s position.
