Wow yesterday afternoon was wild in some areas of the South Shore! I’ve never felt an earthquake before! How about you?

I spoke to Robin, one of the volunteers, at the Talking Information Center. She’s lived in California and knows what a true earthquake can feel like. Robin decribes it as a rolling motion and she knew what it was as soon as it happened yesterday. As small as it was for us, it gave me a taste of what a more serious quake would be like. I’ll take a Nor’easter any day!

MARHFIELD FAIR HIJINKS!

Steven Dodrill (WATD News Reporter and aka Mad Dog Dodrill) will be driving in the Demo Derby at the Fair tomorrow. You should see him. He’s like a little kid gearing up for this thing. Bill’s Repair Service on Rte 139 in Marshfield is helping to prep the Buick LeSabre (with leather seats mind you). Steve says he has a strategy and I of course say, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” At any rate, I understand the stands fill up quickly for this thing so get there early (before the 7pm start time) and cheer our radio boy on!

Summer is winding down and I have to say it’s been a beauty. It always goes by too fast doesn’t it? If you have a favorite summer song you’d like to hear, Dee-Quest me at cathyd@959watd.com or call the WATD request line at 781-837-4900.
I’m all for warmth but I have to admit last week’s heatwave was a bit much. I can’t seem to get anything done when it gets that hot. Every year I make plans to plant and weed and do what needs to be done to get that House Beautiful look and every year it looks like wild dogs got to the yard.
Well you can fit what I know about soccer into a ant’s bellybutton but I do know one thing, our U.S Women’s team is fantastic. Win, lose or draw they gave it their all and we should be very proud of them. The end result isn’t what they had imagined but they can take pride in knowing that they never gave up. What an excellent example for young kids today (and for adults too) that one’s efforts really do matter. Things don’t always go our way but what’s important is to try your best.
CATHY’S COMMENTS

The heat is on this week! Gorgeous summer sun and 80 degree days are here. I love this time of year don’t you? Everything seems to be more relaxed (even if it’s not). The longer days make it seem like I have more time to do things (even if I don’t). When we were kids, summer went on forever. Each day brought a new chance to do fun things. No more teachers, no more books. The hard part was deciding what to do first! A peanut butter and jelly sandwich was all you needed to wolf down before heading out for hours of more play time. As an adult, lunch centers around the question “What is the least fattening thing I can eat before going back to work?” Vacation lets me fall back into kid mode. I get up when I want to. I allow myself a few treats but not enough to earn the title of thunder thighs. And Mr. Dee and I take time to go on some fun day trips. I feel like a kid waiting for summer vacation to begin. Remember that feeling in grade school when you jumped for joy just BECAUSE? That’s where I am right now!

CATHY’S COMMENTS

Bathing suits are the devil’s work. Really… who but the evil one would make you stand in a fluorescent bathed booth in front of a mirror that adds ten pounds? What the heck is the purpose of a tankini anyway? And a bikini? I wear that everyday! I just don’t wear it so you can see it! It’s called UNDERWEAR!!!! Forget the ones with little cheerleader skirts too. They don’t lend themselves to thunder thighs. They can drape the fabric anyway they want a belly bulge is still a belly bulge with draped fabric over it. Stripes, huge flowers go ahead give it your best shot. When the dandelions on your swim togs look like huge sunflowers it’s time to admit the truth. I”m a realist and I’m looking for neck to ankle coverage. Anyone know where I can get a vintage suit from the Victorian era? I believe they were called bloomers. Navy blue is my favorite color.

CATHY’S COMMENTS

I now have specific printed instructions on how to properly adjust my office chair. I am going to attempt to follow them to the letter today and see if for just once in all my years in radio I can get a chair that will be comfortable to sit in. This is no easy task. If you work in an office, I’m sure you’ve met people who have to have a certain chair at a certain height with a certain amount of cushioning, etc. Well, I’m one of those people. If the chair isn’t right, I’ll squirm like a kid in a church pew waiting for the serivce to be over. (“Can we go now?). Think about it. For most of us, cheek hits chair for about 7 or so hours a day. I’m not proud of it but that’s the fact. We’re all going to have “S” shaped spines by the time we retire and that means the only thing we’ll be able to see is our shoes. (And by then we’ll be restricted to COMFORTABLE shoes)! I will not go quietly into curvature of the spine! I’ve been told to stand up straight my whole life but I wouldn’t listen. I’m listening now. I’ll let you know how Chair Adjustment 101 goes.

CATHY’S COMMENTS

Some people have alot to teach us if we’re willing to listen. Greg Porell, host of WATD’s South Shore Senior News, is one of those people. For that past few years, Greg has done a talk show here that always featured helpful info for today’s seniors and those who care for them. The responsibilities of putting together the fine publication South Shore Senior News and the long commute to get here for the show have intervened and made it necessary that tomorrow’s show be his last. I can only say it’s been a pleasure to work with Greg. He’s a true pro and I’ve learned alot from him and his wonderful guests. Keep rockin’ Greg. What you do makes a difference!

CATHY’S COMMENTS

Lazy, hazy days of summer and I’m hooked on baseball. Why do I care if Big Papi gets a home run or Pedroia makes a great play? I blame it on Mr. Dee. He’s the one who got me interested in baseball and football. Of course the fact that he has control of the tv remote may have something to do with it. (Hey you gotta let them think they have SOME control right)? I still drive him crazy with my attempts to tweak the game to make it more interesting. How about if at any point in the game one player can run out of the dugout and tackle the player running to first? Each team gets one shot at it. Now THAT’S entertainment! Don’t get me started on football. If you give a guy a concussion, you have to pay a fine right on the spot and accompany him to the hospital. I should really be in charge. That’s all I’m saying.
