Three South Shore men have been arrested after a two-month long investigation into the distribution of prescription drugs and cocaine within Plymouth and Bristol counties.

State police became suspicious of two U.S Postal Service Express Mail packages that were sent out of Los Angeles, California to residences in Carver and Plymouth.

According to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office, a K9 positively identified that both packages contained drugs. State and local police then set up surveillance at the Carver home and at the Plymouth apartment and watched as the Express Mail packages were delivered.

Search warrants were subsequently executed. A search of 28-year-old Joshua Amado’s Carver home resulted in the seizure of 300 oxycodone pills, cocaine and heroin that was packaged for distribution, and a shotgun.

Nolan Navedo,32, was inside the house and was arrested along with Amado.

Police then searched the Plymouth apartment where 26-year-old James Foster lives — a loaded 9mm firearm, a slew of different prescription medications, and cocaine were seized.

Foster, Navedo, and Amado are facing drug trafficking and possession charges.

State Police have mobilized for the holiday weekend and added 100 additional troopers with zero tolerance for drunk and aggressive drivers.

Troop D Commander Major Anthony Thomas singled out younger drivers and said they should put their cell phones away when behind the wheel. The few seconds taken to text or read a message can be critical in avoiding a crash, Thomas said.

Last year troopers issued over 3,000 tickets and made more than 100 drunken driving arrests, but Thomas was prouder that it’s been almost a year since the last fatality on Route 24.

In addition to a stepped-up police presence, the Department of Transportation will suspend all construction from Friday through Tuesday to make way for the revelers and vacationers that will flood the roadways.

Building bridges between Plymouth, UK and Plymouth, US is a theme that seemed to capture...

Building bridges between Plymouth, UK and Plymouth, US is a theme that seemed to capture the imagination of the UK delegation, town officials and business leaders at luncheon on Plymouth’s waterfront on Thursday.

They exchanged ideas to improve and expand on the shared effort already in place in the lead-up to 2020.

Ken Ashby is a consultant to Plymouth 400. He spoke about the growing collaboration:

“Really everyone knows about the sailing of a ship, the Mayflower, but now I see that there’s a bridge that’s being built to connect these two cities.”

And the importance of connecting via social media was emphasized by David Parlby, CEO of the Plymouth, UK Chamber of Commerce.

“Let’s make sure we’ve got a really good social media program set-up as part of the run-up to 2020 so everybody around the world can experience it and get a feel for it.”

Genevieve Jaeger owns the Cold Spring Motel and chairs the Visitor Services Board:

“I think that there were a lot of very practical ideas because they were coming from individuals from the education field, they were coming from the business field and people were really enthusiastic about making a joint effort not just for 2020 from Plymouth to Plymouth but continuing.”

The UK delegation continues their visit Friday at a State House meeting with Senate President Murray and then off to London from there.

Could there be three car dealerships at Colony Place Shopping Plaza? Maybe. In Plymouth this week the Planning Board heard a proposal to tear down the long vacant Sam’s Club and replace it with three new buildings designed to house auto dealers. Joe Lahan, of 500 Colony Place, LLC, owns the Sam’s Club building, and also has a number of car dealerships in the state. He was not present at the meeting, but was represented by Attorney Bob Betters, who explained that Lahan tried to find other uses for the building:“The initial thought was to try to sell it for retail and that’s what the owner has been doing since he purchased the property in 2010.”

But, there were no takers, so he came up with the concept of three car dealers locating on the property. But for that to occur, special permits will be needed. That process began at the 2011 town meeting when they changed the mixed commerce zoning district in which this property is located to allow car dealerships by special permit. “So we need a special permit from the Plymouth Zoning Board of Appeals for the car dealerships that are proposed. Because the property is in the aquifer protection district, we also need a special permit under the aquifer protection provisions of the bylaw.”

Planning Board members expressed concern about the acres of cars that could possibly occupy the property, based on requirements of three car dealerships. Since this was simply a conceptual plan for review by the Board, no vote was taken.

A gunshot victim who was allegedly raped by Keith Luke during a racially-motivated crime spree gave tearful testimony inside Brockton Superior Court Wednesday afternoon.

With Keith Luke sitting inside the courtroom, she was forced to relive a horrific day in January of 2009 when Luke allegedly knocked on the door of her Brockton home and forced his way inside. She thought she was opening the door for a friend but instead she was greeted by Luke, who was 22-years-old at the time.

She said Luke held her at gunpoint, handcuffed her, and then raped her.

When Selma Goncalves arrived at the house and interrupted the assault, she said Luke fatally shot Goncalves and then pointed the gun in her direction.

“I grabbed the teddy bear and I hugged my teddy bear and he was behind the couch [when] he started shooting me. The first shot was in my head. I pretended that he killed me,” said the victim, who’s not being identified in order to protect her privacy.

She was also shot in both arms and chest.

She said that after Luke left the home she watched as he got into his vehicle and gunned down Arlindo Goncalves, a 72-year-old man who was walking down the street.

The trial of Keith Luke started last week and expected to take several more days.

Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray plans to resign after being named to head a private...

Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray plans to resign after being named to head a private business group. The Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce voted Wednesday to appoint Murray as its president and CEO.

Murray said his resignation would be effective June 2.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Murray said he had not been looking for a new job and that the chamber approached him a month ago about the opportunity.

Murray said his departure has nothing to do with an ongoing investigation into whether his campaign committee improperly accepted contributions raised by former Chelsea Housing Authority director Michael McLaughlin.

There is no provision in state law to fill a vacancy in the lieutenant governor’s office. Murray announced earlier this year that he would not run for governor in 2014.

Murray is a former mayor of Worcester.
