Hanson voters went to the polls in large numbers Saturday to return two selectmen to the board and approve two override questions.

In a three-way race for two spots on the Board of Selectmen, Chairman Steve Amico and Selectman Don Howard prevailed.

“I feel as though we’ve done a good job on the board,” Amico said. “The voters today told us we did do a good job.”

Voters supported an override to buy a new fire truck at a cost of $390,000. A debt exclusion, it will add $103 to the average tax bill for one year. Paying for the truck in one year will save taxpayers $37,000 in interest.

Voters also supported a $237,000 override for the Whitman-Hanson School district.

The overrides attracted 1,642 voters, a high turnout for Hanson Town Elections.

Three Plymouth police cars, Entergy’s security team, and a closed gate didn’t stop a group of 35 protesters from marching to the entrance of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant to deliver a letter addressed to Entergy’s Site Vice President, demanding that Entergy include Cape Cod in the emergency planning zone, withdraw their license renewal application, and immediately shut down the plant because of public safety concerns.

But Entergy refused to let anyone on their property, which didn’t stop Cape Coders Diane Turco and David Agnew from leading some of the anti-nuclear protesters beyond the entrance gate to personally deliver the letter.

Police immediately stopped protesters once they crossed over to private property but the only Entergy officials present were security who refused to take the letter, telling the group to either send it in the mail or leave it on the ground.

“Well then get someone out here in management who can take the letter,” said one protester.

Fourteen protesters were arrested and taken to the Plymouth police station for trespassing. The letter of citizen demands was left on the pavement at Entergy’s gate.

The plant’s license expires June 8th.

At tonight’s Special Town Meeting in Abington, residents will decide the fate of 10 warrant articles.

Article 1 is a zoning bylaw change related to floodplains, the town’s Floodplain Watershed Protection District, flood hazards and related concerns.

Article 2 is a request to transfer $109,000 from the Water Conservation account to fund the town’s portion of the Abington/Rockland Joint Waterworks Pension Costs assessed to the town of Rockland by Plymouth County Retirement in fiscal 2008.

Article 5 asks residents for permission to raise, appropriate or borrow $250,000 to remove and control algae at Great Sandy Bottom Pond. The town of Rockland would contribute $250,000, as well, for the project.

Article 7 would establish a bylaw regarding standards of conduct for town employees and town officials.

Special Town meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. at Abington High School.

It’s mosquito season, and an alarming new study shows the number of Massachusetts residents contracting Eastern Equine Encelphalitis, has grown in recent years.

State health officials say nine people have come down with the mosquito-borne virus since 2006, following years without a human case.

That has scientists wondering whether something new’is happening, and a state panel is working on a report on the virus in humans.

E.E.E. has been the most prevalent in Southeastern Massachusetts, and health agents from several area towns have been calling on the state to do more aerial spraying for mosquitos.

That call has grown louder since an elderly Raynham resident died of the virus last year.

Health officials say its too early to say if more spraying is the right move, but that may change once the state report is released.

With only two races opposed on Scituate’s ballot Saturday, Michael Thomas Long will join the School Committee after defeating his only challenger and incumbent Brian Sullivan, who’s been on the Board of Assessors since 2005, was beat out by Todd Glowac in a three-way challenge.

Scituate Selectman Rick Murray ran unopposed and got elected to a third term but not without a fight by a write-in candidate.

Martin O’Toole pulled papers to run for Scituate Selectman against incumbent Rick Murray but never turned them in to the Town Clerk after hearing it could be a possible three-way race. But once no one came forward by the deadline to challenge Murray, O’Toole took to the campaign circuit just eight days before the election but as a write-in candidate.

“It almost sends a message that nobody in town cares, to have an unopposed race, and I just didn’t think that was right,” stated O’Toole

Selectman Murray beat out all write-in challengers, defeating O’Toole by only about one hundred votes.

About 11% of Scituate voters made it to polls Saturday.

There was a lot going on in Norwell’s election Saturday with an override, two contested races and a key ballot question.

A large turnout of over 4000 voters hit the polls and voted 2535 to 1740 in favor of a $2.8 million dollar proposition 2 ½ override, with $2.3 million earmarked for the schools.

WATD’S John Penny asked School Committee member Amy Koch about how she felt about the vote.

“I feel like the weight of the world has been lifted from our shoulders. It’s just … it’s a thrilling, thrilling feeling, knowing that we’re going to be able to take care of these children and represent the schools, in a really fantastic way. Just … I’m so relieved. So relieved”!

But not everyone is happy about the vote. Marie Molla, one of the people that voted against the override said, “I’m kind of disappointed in the override vote. The manner that the supporters conducted themselves was outlandish; telling students in school that they weren’t going to be allowed to go to college if this didn’t pass! I hope that these people that were behind it … I’m going to be looking forward to seeing their homes in foreclosure, or behind paying their taxes and then we’ll see who was right”!

The override still requires a budget vote at tonight’s town meeting.

In the Selectmen’s race, David DeCoste won a decisive victory and garnered 2308 votes to defeat 12 year Incumbent John Mariano at 1683.

Voters also approved question 2, voting 2573 to 1374 in favor of a Town Charter amendment that changes the Board of Selectmen from a 3 member board to 5 member board, effective next year.

Maureen Clarke-Lewis won a seat on the Board of Assessors over Kevin Costello, 2264 to 1142.
