It was a welcome surprise for more than 200 seniors in Hanover. An anonymous donor paid for lunches to three senior communities in town.

The South Shore YMCA and The Chef’s Table in Marshfield teamed up to deliver the meals to the residents on Thursday.

Sheila Buonaugurio, one of the Resident Service Coordinators at Hanover Legion, said residents were excited for the meals. It was something they were looking forward to all week.

“It’s just so nice to see the community really taking an interest in our seniors and wanting to do something nice and being happy about doing it,” said Buonaugurio. “I’m so fortunate to have this job, I’ve been here almost eight years. I just love everybody I work with. I love the residents. It’s definitely a great community.”

On the menu was a pesto chicken meal with rice and mixed vegetables.

“It’s been great. It’s a win-win for all of us,” said Mark Ellis, the Co-Owner of The Chef’s Table. “It’s keeping my ovens warm back at the shop, keeping me and my staff busy, which has been very nice. From all the meals we did up at Germantown, the brown bag meals, and doing things like this. It’s enabling us to keep things going and working during this tough situation.”

The South Shore YMCA and Chef’s Table worked to provide more than 300 meals to families back in March.

“The response from those folks who got the meals was so positive, they said we had to continue this,” said Paul Gorman, the President and CEO of the South Shore YMCA. “Not only did they continue it a few times leading right up to now, we expanded our fundraising efforts and we’ve worked with a number of restaurants over the past few months to provide meals for folks in our homeless shelter, kids in our child care center.”

In addition to The Chef’s Table, the YMCA worked with Wahlburgers, Tinker’s Son, and Montilio’s to provide meals to people.

“The team at the South Shore Y is always terrific. They have really snapped into a complete public service mode here,” said State Rep. Dave DeCoste. “They’re running their own food bank, they’re providing emergency child care, so first responders can get to work safely.”

The meals were delivered to residents at Barstow Village, Legion Apartments, and the Bethany Apartments.

Mary Means, the Property Manager for the Barstow Village, says it’s a nice change for residents.

“The hardest thing is just the isolation, because they’re so conscientious about keeping themselves safe and others,” said Means. “They’re very respectful of wearing their masks and keeping their social distancing. It seems like in the past couple of weeks, they’re feeling a little freer that they can come down and say hello to their neighbors and have a conversation, which they severely miss.”
