Saturday, June 14th, 2014:
It’s the 2nd Annual South Shore Coop Tour today from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Rain or Shine). Tickets are $6 M/$8 NM tickets in advance; $10 day-of event. Tickets must be presented at each coop. Children 4 years and under are free. From the backyard to the barnyard, families can tour multiple private chicken coops on the South Shore (in Norwell, Cohasset, Marshfield, and Pembroke), meet a variety of chicken breeds, and chat with owners about poultry. Discover unique ways to house and care for poultry and view examples of tried and true methods chicken owners utilize for predator protection and surviving the New England winter. Be sure to stop by the Science Center to greet the 4-week old chicks, and learn about SSNSC’s new chick hatching program. At SSNSC you can also see antique chicken equipment, learn about egg nutrition, try your hand at chicken games, meet “Friends of a Feather” 4-H poultry students, visit with our hens, and more! The Blessing of the Fleet on the Plymouth harbor is today from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. There will be a band, a touch-a-tank for kids with lobster and other fish in it, lots of good food and of course, a clergyman to actually bless the fleet.

The Marshfield Recreation Department is inviting families with young children to attend the first annual “Touch A Truck/Plant A Sunflower & Story Time” event today from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The event takes place at the Marshfield Recreation Center at Coast Guard Hill, 900 Ferry Street in Marshfield.

girl with tortoiseJoe Kenny will share his love and knowledge of unusual, fascinating creatures at the Soule Homestead Education Center, 46 Soule Street, in Middleboro.  Children and adults will have an opportunity to see and touch unique specimens from around the world.  Joe will discuss the differences between various species, their habitats, feeding requirements, and so much more.  He will also explain which animals do not make great pets and will emphasize the pros and cons of owning them.  Find out more about Joe at www.joescrazzycritters.com .
