On Saturday and Sunday, this weekend and next weekend at 10:30 a.m., take a guided tour of Fort Warren designed especially for children and their families.
Fort Warren, on George’s Island, was built to defend the port of Boston and was staffed with soldiers for about 90 years. Now a National Historic Landmark, Warren held captured Confederates during the Civil War. Common guided tour themes include, Civil War prison life, design and evolution of the fort, armaments history, social history, and the World War I and World War II years.
This tour will feature the stories and folklore of Fort Warren and move quickly through the Fort’s dark tunnels and rooms. This event is designed for children of all ages. This event is free but you must pay for the ferry to the island. For details visit their website here. And while you’re on George’s Island, join Park Rangers at 2:15pm as they share this famed folklore tale of the ghost that haunts Fort Warren. Park Rangers will tell this dynamic story before leading the group through the dark tunnels of Fort Warren. The Lady in Black is supposedly an apparition on George’s Island; a young woman in black robes that wanders about the grounds. She is Mrs. Andrew Lanier, wife of a Confederate soldier that was imprisoned there in 1861. Edward Rowe Snow, a 20th century local historian, had popularized the myth. This free event is also designed especially for kids, happening this and next Saturday and Sunday at 2:15pm.

Hingham Police are hosting their annual Family Fun Day today from 11am-2pm at Cronin Field behind the Central Fire Station. You’ll have a chance to see police cars, motorcycles, fire trucks as well as Coast Guard Boats and Army National Guard Trucks. Kids can participate in pony rides, the petting zoo, dunk tank, moon walk and face painting. You’ll have a chance to see a K-9 demonstration and a State Police helicopter landing – weather permitting. Grab a hamburger or hot dog and a cold drink and don’t forget about cookie decorating too! Head to Sandwich to the Heritage Museum and Gardens for their Even Bigger Big Bugs Bash! This event is free with Museum admission from 10am-6pm. Participate in the insect safari where you visit all ten David Rogers’ Big Bugs sculptures and learn bug facts. You can make your own insects to take home with crafty critters in Hidden Hollow and at noon you can make your own costume and join the dance party at the Bug Ball on the Hidden Hollow Stage at noon!
