Experience the magic of ZooLights at the Stone Zoo until January 1st! This is an event for all ages that promises to be dazzling! Enter a winter wonderland of tree-lined paths lit by thousands of twinkling lights. Stroll through the festively decorated Yukon Creek, home to bald eagles, Canada lynx and reindeer! In fact you can even have hot chocolate with a reindeer! That’s a very special event that is on waitlist right now, but you can learn more at zoonewengland.org. You can also have your photo taken with Jolly Old St. Nick through December 23 and enjoy a moonlit spin on our carousel or other rides (for an additional fee). ZooLights is from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. each night and costs $8 for members/$9 for non-members.

It’s time to celebrate with The Children’s Museum in Easton with their Family New Year’s Party from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The party is bursting with crafts, games, activities and magic shows that mean family fun for everyone. Occasionally you’ll break from the merriment to count down the New Year with confetti blasts and a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne. Food and drink available for purchase and admission is $10 and includes Awesome Robb’s Magic Show at 11:00 a.m., 1 and 3:00 p.m. and the confetti blasts at noon, 2 and 4:00 p.m.
Sunday, January 1, 2017:
First Day Hikes! A movement that started in MA in 1992 and swept the nation in 2012, the DCR wants you to get outside and take a hike on New Year’s Day. You can hike Blue Hills Reservation at 1:00 p.m. – meet at the Trailside Museum at noon for a wildlife presentation and enjoy hot chocolate and snacks too. There will be three easy to moderate hikes, including a stroll around Houghton’s Pond for families with young children. The hikes will take about an hour to an hour and a half to complete. You can also take a hike at Nantasket Beach at 10:00 a.m. – meet at the Mary Jeanette Murray Bathhouse – snacks and hot beverages will be served post-hike. This is a three mile walk down Nantasket Ave to Kenberma Street. Visit mass.gov/eea/agencies/dcr for all the details.
Holly Hill Farm in Cohasset welcomes you to start 2017 with a woodland walk through their beautiful woods. Bundle up, bring family and friends and meet new ones ringing in the New Year! If you have youngsters who would enjoy a brisker walk you can participate in the Family Hike for a faster paced walk. Or you can join the slower paced stroll with Steve Ivas who will point out some of nature’s winter highlights in the woods not seen during the warmer months. Stop into the Tomato Barn for a cup of Cindy’s Incredible Hot Cocoa! Meet at the Barn, rain or shine at 12:45 p.m. No need to preregister for this free event. Donations accepted to support educational programs.
Join the North & South Rivers Watershed Association for their 23rd year of ringing in the New Year together exploring the watershed. This year’s walk will start at the Cardinal Cushing Center in Hanover where you will then proceed to the dam removal site on the Third Herring Brook which will be in progress. This walk through 100 acres of woodlands to the brook is on private property owned by Cardinal Cushing Centers. This event is free and the walk begins at 1:00 p.m. and should end around 2:30 p.m.
