Hingham: Man sentenced to jail for biting off pieces of Facebook foe’s ears

A Hingham man who has admitted he bit off parts of a man’s ears after an angry Facebook spat is heading to jail.

19-year-old Andrew MacDonald, of Grove street in Hingham, was ordered to two years in the house of correction, with sixty days to serve and the rest suspended, after pleading guilty to two counts of mayhem.

The charges stem from an incident back on November 21, 2009, when MacDonald reportedly met up with a group of friends and the victim at a hamburger place on Bridge Street in Weymouth. MacDonald and the victim had been exchanging angry Facebook messages several days prior, according to Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey.

A fight between the two ensued with both men yelling and punching each other. During the fight, MacDonald grabbed the victim and bit his upper right ear and spit a portion of the ear onto the sidewalk. He then bit the lower portion of the man’s left earlobe off and spit that onto the sidewalk as well.

The victim and both portions of his ears were taken to the hospital.

Along with the prison sentence, MacDonald was also ordered to continue mental health treatment, to stay away from the victim and issue a letter of apology.
