Plymouth: NRC to conduct evaluations at Pilgrim

As a result of a number of performance issues at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth, eight inspectors from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will conduct evaluations in a number of critical areas starting this week.

The inspectors will be reviewing an evaluation done by plant owner Entergy, to try to determine why problems occurred that triggered several so-called “indicator changes”. They will also look into the fixes, or other corrective actions, put in place by Entergy to avoid the problems from happening again. Another area the team will look at is whether there were any safety culture weaknesses that may have caused or played a role in the performance issues.

According to the NRC, nuclear safety culture is defined as quote – “values and behaviors that emphasize safety over competing goals to ensure protection of people and the environment”.

After the team’s visit to Pilgrim has been completed, the inspectors will brief Entergy on their findings, and a formal inspection report will be issued within 45 days.

About David Skill

Dave Skill’s radio career began in the fall of 1964 when he arrived on the campus of Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA. Dave barely got his bags unpacked when he paid a visit to WCHC, the campus radio station. And, before he knew it, he was spending so much time as a disc jockey and news writer/reporter, it seemed like he was majoring in “radio” and minoring in academics at “The Cross”. As you might imagine, his grades reflected it! During his junior and senior years, he also worked weekends in news and as a disc jockey at WNEB, the CBS radio affiliate in Worcester at the time...
