The Plymouth Board of Health has postponed a vote on changing the age limit for tobacco sales. The proposal is to restrict the sale of tobacco and tobacco flavored products to anyone under the age of 21. But public comment was allowed at their well-attended meeting Wednesday.

Cheryl Sbarra is an attorney with the state association of health boards. She emphasized that kids are consistently exposed to tobacco products whenever they go into a convenience store.

“This is intentional marketing on the part of the tobacco industry to get these kids addicted to tobacco. Kids have been described by the industry as replacement smokers. That’s their goal is to get as many replacement smokers for the adults that die from the addiction of tobacco.”

Attorney Steve Triffletti requested that his client’s establishment be exempt from the proposed regulation.

“The Hookah Lounge, which is located on Court Street in Plymouth is an opportunity for people to have tobacco smoking without tar and therefore there is no carcinogen in the tar,” said Triffletti.

But Dr. Lester Hartman, a pediatrician, disagrees.

“Hookah tobacco and smoke contain several toxic agents known to cause lung, bladder and oral cancer. So, it’s not just the tar that you’re hearing about—this is a very serious, addictive product,” said Dr. Hartman.

The Board will vote at its next meeting on July 13th.
