Buzzards Bay: Coast Guard Suspends Search

The Coast Guard has announced that they are suspending their search for a possible mariner in distress near Buzzards Bay.

The search was launched Wednesday night after three faint mayday calls were heard over the radio.

Watchstanders responded to the call but were unable to make contact with the caller.

The Coast Guard called off the search, which covered over 760 square miles, shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday.

During the search the Coast Guard utilized Coast Guard Cutter Hammerhead, Coast Guard Cutter Shrike, and s 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from Coast Guard Station Menemsha.

The Fairhaven Fire Department, New Bedford Fire Department, Mattapoisett Fire Department, Dartmouth Fire Department, and Massachusetts Environmental Police were also involved in the search.

Officials say the search will remain suspended pending the development of any new information.
