Boston: High School Hockey Finals Recap

The high school hockey finals took place on Sunday at TD Garden in Boston. Here’s a recap of the action.

The Plymouth South boys’ hockey team won the first state title in program history with a 4-3 overtime over Stoneham. Junior Alex Hayward scored 2 minutes and 26 seconds into OT to help the Panthers win the Division 2 title.

“This is unreal,” said senior captain Ryan Cummings. “This is a dream come true, but I wouldn’t want this dream to come true without those other 22 boys and the coaching staff in that locker room right there.”

Waltham beat Marshfield, 4-1 in the Division 1 title game. Max Burum scored the lone goal for the Rams. Lucas Lanagan scored for Hanover, but the Indians fell, 2-1 to Shrewsbury in the Division 3 game.

In the Super 8 Final, Milton native Joe Dragon scored the tying goal with 50 seconds left, and Abington native Maverick Woods scored the OT winner 1:30 in as BC High beat Pope Francis, 2-1.

“Words can’t describe it. The boys were buzzing all game,” said Woods. “I can’t thank Timmy Kelly enough. He’s been feeding me all season, I’ve been looking to give it back to him too. I called for it, he finally got it to me, and I just tried to rip it through the net.”

In girls’ hockey, Woburn beat Methuen/Tewksbury, 1-0 for the Div. 1 title. In the Div. 2 final, Wellesley topped Canton, 1-0. Senior Canton goalie Colleen Kelleher had 25 saves.

“Even though we might not have won the state finals, I’m just so glad I got to be with these people,” said Kelleher. “There’s a lot of teams that are really good and win every year. I’m glad I got a chance to experience it [with this team].”
