A Wareham man was indicted on charges in connection with a March fire.

The Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office says a Plymouth County Grand Jury returned indictments against 40-year-old Mondel Johnson on charges of two counts of Armed Assault with the Intent to Murder, Arson of a Dwelling, two counts of Assault and Battery by Means of a Dangerous Weapon, and Malicious Damage to Property.

The Wareham Fire Department and crews from surrounding communities responded to a fire in an abandoned property at 36 Restful Lane in East Wareham on March 29.

The home was completely destroyed by the fire, which was determined to be arson.

Investigators also located a female victim who was trapped inside the fire before she was able to escape.

An investigation determined that Johnson entered the home with the female victim where he allegedly attacked her, at one point striking her in the head with a hammer, poured a flammable liquid over the female victim then lit the fire.

The victim awoke to smoke and flames and was able to flee to a neighbor’s house for assistance.

She was later transported to Tobey Hospital and treated for a head injury.

The District Attorney’s Office says Johnson will be arraigned on the charges at a later date in Brockton Superior Court.
