A Marine who died while fighting in World War II will be laid to rest today.

Private First Class John William MacDonald was killed during the Battle of Tarawa on Nov. 20, 1943.

Those who died in battle were buried in a number of battlefield cemeteries and MacDonald’s remains weren’t recovered until 2015.

Author and veteran Mike Cunningham told WATD’s Veterans’ Voice they are looking for people to come out and honor this fallen hero.

Cunningham says that moments like this demonstrate America’s resolve to honor those who have fallen in service to their country.

A Prayer Service will be held at 11:00 AM in the Cartwright Funeral Home in Holbrook.

The service will be followed by a burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 12:45 p.m.
