Plymouth looks forward to welcoming the world’s largest Viking warship next week.

Amy Naples, Director of the Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce says planners of the east coast tour of the 115 foot Viking ship, Draken, reached out to the Chamber months ago, interested in bringing the ship to town.

“It is the largest Viking ship sailing in modern times and we’re so excited to welcome them here from July 17th through the 20th.”

And on Friday, the 20th, the Blessing of the Fleet takes place, so …

“…it’ll actually coincide with the departure of the Draken on Friday evening, so people can go out an actually watch the blessing.”

The warship arrives in the harbor on the 16th and Harbormaster Chad Hunter says preparations are under way. Because the ship is low to the water…

“…we have to basically come up with a gangway and float system to allow people to go onto the vessel and come off the vessel safely. Unlike the Mayflower, where it has a lot of freeboard, the gangway can go right from the dock to the ship, but in this case we’ve got to go from the dock, gangway down to float system and then onto the ship from there.”
