A battery powered flashlight is being cited as the cause of a fire at the Hanover Police Station and Emergency Communications Center.

Fire officials say that shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday crews were dispatched to 129 Rockland St. over reports of smoke in the building.

Upon arrival firefighters met with police officers who told them there was a fire in the building that they tried to extinguish but were unsuccessful.

Firefighters then began evacuating everyone from the building, including dispatchers and 911 calls were rerouted to Pembroke Police.

Crews found a fire in the locker rooms which was extinguished.

Although the fire damage was contained to a row of lockers there was smoke and soot damage throughout the building.

Crews also ventilated smoke and toxic gas from the building and air quality was monitored during the operation.

A police officer and janitor were treated for smoke inhalation before being taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
