One person was hospitalized following a fire in Bourne Tuesday night.

Bourne Police say that shortly after 8 p.m. they were dispatched to a multi-family residence on Sandwich Rd. for a report of a possible structure fire.

Responding officers went into the building to help residents evacuate before they encountered heavy smoke.

Fire crews then arrived on scene and took over operations.

Bourne Firefighters IAFF Local 1717 says that crews found two occupants trapped on the second floor hanging out of two different windows and used ground ladders to rescue the occupants.

At one point the fire reached three alarms but the union says it was under control a few hours later.

Two police officers were evaluated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

One of the building’s occupants was taken to an area hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

Mutual aid was provided by ten Fire Departments.
