Plymouth: Veteran School Committee Member Margie Burgess Honored with the Crystal Apple Award

In Plymouth, veteran School Committee Member Margie Burgess receives the first annual Crystal Apple Award, named in her honor, by the town’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She also received an official citation by the State Senate. This—at the 10th annual teacher appreciation dinner, held at the church on Wednesday night.

Church official Katie Berry says the Crystal Apple award recognizes excellence in education and…

“…all of those qualities that Margie Burgess has, everything from volunteer work, to working with children in the community and doing so selflessly.”

The event was attended by the honored teachers, the School Committee and Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Gary Maestas:

“Margie Burgess has been on the Plymouth School Committee for 22 years. I have been here for 20. Margie has been instrumental in the Plymouth Public Schools and its development, and Margie is a leader with the vision of children in mind.”

Chairman of the School Committee, Dr. James Sorensen:

“Beside going to School Committee meetings, Margie will be out 5 nights a week, 2 events a night and she never complains, so she’s way beyond the average school committee member.”

State Representative Vinny de Macedo delivered a citation from the State Senate in recognition of the award:

“I’ve worked with Margie for over 20 years and I’ve watched her commitment to education. I’ve watched her commitment to the students in our community.”

Lots of words, but Margie had none:

“I really have no words to express how deeply I feel about this honor.”
