Hingham: Vice Chair of Hingham School Committee to Run For County Commissioner

Carlos DaSilva is a Brazilian-American who was elected to the Hingham School Committee in 2016 and reelected last spring, and now serves as Vice Chair. DaSilva, who is a state auditor with the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, will run for County Commissioner as a Democrat.

Arriving in the United States as an 18 year old who could not speak English, Carlos DaSilva has worked to help others:

“So, I served as a volunteer of the Federation for Children with Special Needs providing workshops in Portuguese and Spanish for those parents out there who could not speak the language, helping them understand their rights in the public schools.”

DaSilva believes service as a County Commissioner should be on a volunteer basis:

“I serve on the Hingham School Committee—we are 100% volunteer. When I took the position I knew there was no pay. Obviously, I’m not doing this for the pay; I’m doing this for the service.—it’s all about our community. The County Commission—it’s all about the community. So, I’m not looking for pay.

And further, DaSilva thinks the salary of the County Commissioners would be better used to help the 27 communities that make up Plymouth County.

“…that money, actually, they should reinvest back into the community.”

As far as the County Farm is concerned, DaSilva says:

“I believe that the farm should continue to be run by the Sheriff as it has been for a hundred years.”

Two Commissioners seats are up in 2020, that of Greg Hanley and Dan Pallotta. Both Hanley and Pallotta have served two 4 year terms.
