Plymouth: Select Board Supports Petitioned Article Allowing Marijuana Establishments in Highway Commercial Zone

In Plymouth, the Select Board vote to support a petitioned article asking to add the Highway Commercial District to the locations where marijuana establishments are permitted. That would be the Home Depot Drive area as well as the development across Long Pond Road from Home Depot called the Shops at Five, or the Grove. Right now marijuana establishments are allowed by special permit only in the town’s light industrial zones.

Town Meeting member Brendan Brady’s article 17 looks to expand the allowed locations of marijuana establishments to the Highway Commercial zone. Marijuana establishments include: marijuana retailers, testing facilities, cultivators, product manufacturers and medical marijuana facilities. Brady told the Select Board that this change would allow those establishments to be more evenly distributed across town and increase revenue.

Selectman Chair Ken Tavares says it was a winning argument:

“The vote was 5 to 0 to support and make a recommendation to the Fall Town Meeting to support Brendan’s article. The arguments were very convincing on all fronts as to why this could or should be done at this time and the Board was impressed with the availability of a new source of revenue that the town could generate. We were allowed additional taxes on the marijuana products and this source would go directly to the town.”
