The Abington community is mourning the loss of the Zaccardi family.

The two parents 43-year-old Joseph Zaccardi and 40-year old Deirdre Zaccardi, 11-year-old Alexis Zaccardi, and nine-year-old twins Nathaniel and Kathryn Zaccardi were found dead in their home on 135 Centre Ave. Monday.

Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz says preliminarily, their deaths appear to be the result of gunshots. This is an isolated incident.

Outside of their home, a makeshift memorial has been made with teddy bears and flowers. Around town are green ribbons, balloons, and hearts are displayed on electronic signs.

Ramona Wheeler from Rockland shops in Abington, she can’t believe such a crime took place in town.

“In Abington of all places. Who would expect something that quietly violent. Five people, the three children of an age where they knew what was happening,” said Wheeler. “That’s very sad.”

Christine Mulkern lives around the corner from the scene, she says she was horrified when she heard the news.

“It’s hard to understand how anything could happen like that and you can’t explain it to your kids. My kids are in high school, but I don’t understand it. That’s how I explained it to them,” said Mulkern. “These things just don’t make sense and we just need to help out the best way we can.”

In a statement, family members say they appreciate the outpouring of support but are requesting privacy at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Keeping Pace with Multiple Miracles in West Bridgewater.
