Crews were called to the scene of a fire in the area of 178 Winter St. in Hanover.

WATD’s Lenny Rowe arrived on scene to find heavy smoke and flames.

Hanover Fire Chief Jeffrey Blanchard says there are no injuries, and one person was able to get safely when the fire started.

The fire happened at an industrial building across from 178 Winter Street. More than 8 towns provided mutual aid, with towns as far as Plympton providing resources to the scene.

Blanchard says once they realized everyone was out, they took a more defensive approach.

“There were some propane tanks on the outside of the building that were challenging initially,” said Blanchard. “We had to get some hose lines in place to protect those so they didn’t rupture. It did sound like there were a few that may have ruptured inside the building.”

Early in the afternoon, flames could be seen through the roof and thick, black smoke poured out of the building.

“We had assistance from a number of mutual aid partners in the area,” said Blanchard. “The Department of Fire Services provided a rehab unit, and their hazardous materials team responded to do some air monitoring in the neighborhood for us, which has proven to be clean. That’s good news. We had MassDEP on scene too.”

It took more than an hour to knock down the heavy fire. Crews will be on scene through the evening.

The State Fire Marshall’s Office has been called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
