The Plympton Fire Department got outfitted with new gear thanks to a $25,000 grant from the Gary Sinise Foundation.

The grant money was used to purchase TECGEN gear at no added cost to taxpayers in town. Fire Chief Steven Silva says the gear will be used for every call except for structure fires.

“The Gary Sinise Foundation, they’ve been wonderful. We’ve been trying to get this gear for a long time,” said Silva. “Having them step forward like this is truly a gift. It was unexpected and we’re very happy about it.”

Silva says while building fires are down, other rescue operations have increased.

“More importantly, because it’s not going into structural fires, we don’t have the exposure to carcinogens. That is becoming a big problem in our industry. because we’ll be wearing this most often, it limits exposure on our bodies,” said Silva. “I feel that this going to make my department healthier and more efficient.”

The gear that was purchased gives the department more options at scenes. The gear is lighter and reduces heat stress.

“It’s another option, and more departments will be going this route,” said Captain Paul Lamoureux. “We were lucky to get this.”

Each member of the department was outfitted with the new gear.

“It’s just unbelievable. The process was very easy. Their generosity is beyond words,” said Captain John Sjostedt. “Anything that keeps our guys safe goes beyond words of thanks.”
