Hanover: Construction and Debris Disposal on Hold at Transfer Station

by | Jul 21, 2020 | News

In Hanover, the disposal of construction and debris has been a hot topic for residents at the transfer station. The selectmen are considering options for the future.

A few voters at the Annual Town Meeting wanted to modify the transfer station budget to keep a dumpster for construction and debris disposal.

Those motions were unsuccessful, and the town stopped accepting collection on June 30, when the town’s contract expired.

DPW Director Victor Diniak feels they would need more staff to keep it in check.

“We understand there are some people who are a little upset about the C and D going away, but that was thoroughly talked about at several Selectmen meetings as well as the Town Meeting,” said Diniak. “If the town chooses to move forward with brining C and D back, our recommendation will be a significant increase in the cost to cover all of the costs associated with C and D, including our labor and equipment costs associated with it.”

Selectman John Barry wondered if there was a way to change the layout of the station and use cameras to monitor the construction and debris area.

“We have looked into cameras and automated gates, the real problem is they’re not 100 percent accurate. They’re really designed for post-processing. We can make it work, but it’s going to be a lot of work to make it work,” said Diniak.

Diniak felt a full-time person would be needed to properly monitor the area.

Town Manager Joe Colangelo and Diniak have been discussing options for the service, but more work is needed. The Selectmen plan on conducting a site visit and will continue to consider options.
