An annual tradition returns to the Rockland schools, with Pink Out Day taking place Friday to support breast cancer awareness.

WATD’s Lenny Rowe files this report:

The Rockland Middle and High School Student Government Councils are organizing the event, and have a goal to raise $10,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Junior Sydney Blaney, Co-Chair of the Community Service Committee, said they expanded the event to include the elementary schools, and have nearly doubled the amount raised from last year.

“I think it’s just a surreal moment, this is a really important cause to many of the students at Rockland High School, the middle school, and the whole district,” said Blaney. “I think that all of us putting our minds together, coming together, and wearing pink, it’s just an amazing thing to be a part of.”

Blaney and sophomore Co-Chair Avery Burke have been coordinating the effort, selling pink shirts to raise funds. In addition, students will take part in the 29th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Boston on Sunday.

Kara Penney, the Co-Advisor for the Student Government Council, says it’s been impressive seeing Blaney and Burke rally the schools.

“They have taken this opportunity by storm. They have made posters, they have promoted signing up for the breast cancer walk, they’re decorating the hallways, they’re individually reaching out to teachers for them to support,” said Penney. “To see them take such leadership roles, be really mature, and get their classmates involved has been amazing. It gives me chills just talking about it.”

The Pink Out Day is an annual tradition in Rockland. With last year’s event having lower participation due to the coronavirus pandemic, the student council is looking forward to bringing the community together.

“It’s awesome, it’s an amazing feeling. I’ve said it a couple of times, I couldn’t have worked with a better group of people,” said Blaney. “I think everyone is in it for the right reasons, everyone’s heart is in it. That’s just something that you don’t find everywhere.”
