Democrat William Keating has withstood a strong Republican challenge to retain a Massachusetts House seat held by Democrats for nearly 40 years. The Norfolk district attorney defeated Republican Jeff Perry Tuesday in the 10th Congressional District.

It encompasses Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket and is where the late Senator Edward Kennedy used to vote.

Keating’s win countered a Republican tide sweeping the country.

Perry was running strong after pledging to cut government spending, revamp the Obama administration’s health care law and crack down on illegal immigrants.

Keating unleashed a series of TV ads accusing Perry of overlooking a fellow police officer accused of illegally strip-searching teenagers. Keating will replace retiring Democratic Rep. William Delahunt.
