What to do with the kids this weekend: Friday, December 21 and beyond



Saturday Dec 22 you can enjoy breakfast with Santa and Friends at Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford. Enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet, share your wish list with Santa and meet some of the Zoo’s favorite resident animals. Be sure to bring your camera! Have you checked out ZooLights at the Stone Zoo? It runs every day this month, except for Christmas Day, from 5 – 9:00 p.m. with an extra hour until 10:00 p.m. December 21 and 22! Stroll through the tree-lined paths lit by thousands of twinkling lights. Different exhibits are lit and there are special days and guests like on Sunday from 5-9 when the Trolls visit for fun and prizes. All December and January go on a reindeer quest at Weir River Farm in Hingham! Grab your boots (or skis or snow shoes when we need ‘em) and seek out the elusive herd of wooden reindeer sculptures found throughout the farm’s trails. See how many you can find and leave a bell around each one’s neck! Start the quest in the lot by the green house at 140 Turkey Hill Lane, the bells will hang on the bulletin board. Something to check out in Boston is taking place at Faneuil Hall, it’s called Blink! It’s a light and sound show running until January 1st. Blink features the signature holiday tree at Marketplace Center joined by other trees and lights throughout the property featuring six holiday favorites. Performances run from 4:30 – 10:00 p.m. daily. Its kids’ weekend this weekend where there will be a host of activities for kids of all ages including the Candyland tournament! Santa will be there Saturday from 10-noon with the Candyland tournament.


Friday, December 21:

*****THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO SAT DEC 22!   A great night for twilight solstice exploration at Norris Reservation in Norwell from 4 – 6:00 p.m. today! A walk through allows you to explore nocturnal wildlife and their adaptations. This is a great program for kids and families looking to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday. The tour is guided by Brian Taylor, Environmental Educator at the NSRWA. Brian has led countless expeditions in the backcountry and is a certified Wilderness First Responder! Sunday, December 23:

New Hope Chapel Norwell presents a live nativity Christmas on the Commons on Norwell Commons from noon until 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 23. There will be free hay rides every 30 minutes along with the Salvation Army Band. There will be a live petting zoo, along with libations to enjoy such as warm cider, hot chocolate and food including cornbread and chili.


December Vacation Week:

The South Shore Natural Science Center in Norwell is your destination for school vacation week programs for kids’ ages 3 through 6 years of age. Teachers and Naturalists combine their talents to facilitate children’s discovery of the small animals and habitats in their own backyard. You’ll explore some of our favorite winter stories through dramatic play, art and outdoor discovery. From trail hikes, to animal observation, to reenactments of our favorite tales, you can be sure our days will be full of fun and enriching activities. Dress for the weather! Plymouth WinterFest 2018 is Saturday, December 29th from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. in downtown Plymouth. Featuring a laser light show, street performers and music, an aerial circus at Memorial Hall, face painting and so much more! So many wonderful family-friendly attractions and activities, inside and outside of many Main and Court Street merchants and restaurants, help design a fun-filled celebration of arts and entertainment. A portion of the money raised for WinterFest 2018 will be used for scholarships made available to local your for assistance with payment of fees for organized sports and other activities. Been to the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton? Children under 12 are admitted for free and everyone is admitted for free Thursdays from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. Admission is free for Brockton residents! www.fullercraft.org 


The Children’s Museum in Boston costs $1 to enter Fridays from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m.! Current exhibits include Explore-a-Saurus where you can assume the role of scientist and explore the evidence, the science and the features that make dinosaurs so compelling. You can touch and measure a fossil footprint and learn what clues it gives about a dinosaur’s size. You can manipulate a full-size model and learn how they moved and rearrange bone puzzles to learn about dinosaur anatomy.
