Friday, January 31, 2020:

The Weir River Farm New Year Bonfire was rescheduled from Jan 3 to Jan 31st! Even though we’re a few weeks in you can ring in the New Year on Turkey Hill and join the Trustees to set your positive intentions for the rest of the year. Warm yourself in front of the bonfire, grab some food or drink at the food trucks and then head into the night woods for a guided hike. Saturday, February 1, 2020:

Head to Easton and join Kyla and the park staff for the winter tracking walk at Borderland State Park from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. today. On the hike you’ll look for signs of wildlife, like animal tracks. You’ll work together to identify what animal makes the tracks. Meet at the visitor center and be sure to dress for the weather. After the hike grab a cup of hot chocolate at the visitor’s center. Saturday Science is back every first Saturday of the month for another fantastic year. The Hingham Public Library hosts Saturday Science which is designed to expose kids to different scientific fields and the leading female scientists in those fields. The theme for this year’s series is The Science of Food and each session includes a hand-on experiment or craft activity tailored to two elementary school age groups: K-2, which meets from 9:15 – 10:00 a.m. and 3 – 5 which meets from 10:15 – 11:00 a.m. Age limits are strictly enforced to ensure a positive experience for all kids. Today’s theme: dinosaur dig – what did they eat, and the scientists are the Leakey Family. Saturdays at Bay Farm continues and today you can enjoy Mamasteph’s Music from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.! Head to the Great Room on the Duxbury campus of Bay Farm for a morning of song and dance with the legendary Mamasteph. The event is open to the public – just register on their site so they have a guest count. $5 donation for families attending.

 

The Hingham Public Library has a wonderful opportunity for your new(ish) reader to gain comfort and experience reading: it’s their read to a dog program Saturdays from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Designed for kids ages 5 and older you can reserve a 15 minute reading session by calling the Children’s Department: 781.741.1405 x1403. This week you’ll read to Salty, a Chihuahua and his partner Christina. Reading to a trained therapy dog helps develop literacy skills and builds confidence and self-esteem. The library’s canine friends are all wonderful, patient listeners who are looking forward to reading with you!

 

Sunday, February 2, 2020:

Head to the Eel River Preserve today from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. for a Groundhog Day Family Hike with the Wildlands Trust team in Plymouth! Enjoy the hike along the nature trails of the Eel River Preserve – you’ll make several stops along the way to observe nature and talk about the birds and other creatures that make this habitat their home. All ages are welcome for this 1.5 mile walk. This event is free but Wildlands Trust would like you to register. North Quincy High School is host to the 2020 Lunar New Year Festival by Quincy Asian Resources, from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. There will be a Lion Dance Ceremony at noon along with other live traditional cultural performances, arts and crafts, magic, food and drinks and God of Fortune presenting red envelopes.
