In Plymouth,Veterans Day began in 1919 as Armistice Day and became a national holiday in 1938 to honor World War 1 veterans.  But after World War II and the Korean War it was renamed Veterans Day—making the holiday 105 years old on Tuesday—when there will be a celebration at Memorial Hall—and the special guest will be retired Major General Paul Hurley, who is now Pastor at St. Bonaventure’s Church.

Asked if, in his experience as a veteran himself, veterans appreciate that this country has established a day to honor them—and do they feel comforted by that, Reverend Paul Hurley has this to say:

“For people that have served and given themselves in sacrifice, they know how important it is to have Veterans Day, have Memorial Day.  There’s a point and a tangible moment where people can know with a certain amount of certainty that what they did was right, and good and honored. If you don’t have that as a country, as a nation as a culture you’re losing, you’re losing almost the essence of what you’re all about.”

Hosted by the Department of Veterans Services, Reverend Hurley will speak at the Veterans Day Celebration at Memorial Hall at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 11th.
