In Plymouth, sand mining, preventing it or at least limiting it, was the topic at a meeting held by the Plymouth Stewardship Alliance, a local environmental advocacy group, on Saturday the 15th, at the public library.
WATD’s Bobbi Clark has more….
Nancy Mukundan of the Plymouth Stewardship Alliance says progress has been made:
“We have made good progress that with working with the Planning Board and the Select Board, that we’re in the process of forming a by-law review committee who will look at strengthening our laws that can limit sand mining.”
Zoning Board of Appeals member David Peck says the Alliance has been working for months, originally planning….
“…to bring a moratorium to Town Meeting—withdrew it so we could create this new committee. The first appointments are as of next Thursday by COPC. A week later by the Select Board—I think by the 1st week or two in December, we should have a committee of 9 ready to go. Town Meeting approved up to seventy-five thousand dollars of consultant money to assist this committee. And our overall goal is to bring it to fall Town Meeting 2026.”
Planning Board Chair Steven Bolotin:
“So, it’s a Planning Board Committee, although there are appointments from the Planning Board, Select Board and the Committee of Precinct Chairs. And that committee will come forward with recommendation to the Planning Board which will then go before Town Meeting.”
Vice Chair of the Select Board Dick Quintal:
“There’s a lot of concern with sand removal and water quality and they’re both legitimate concerns. And, I’m here to learn, listen and take action.”
