The Marshfield Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to close the parking lots to beaches in town.
The Selectmen called an emergency meeting after Governor Charlie Baker’s order that state beach parking lots be closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Marshfield Police Chief Phil Tavares says while the beaches are not closed, they wanted to reduce the number of people in an area.
“When all the beaches around us shut down; the state, Duxbury, Nantasket, what we’re afraid of was an influx of people from out of town coming to Marshfield and congregating, and continuing the spread of this terrible virus,” said Tavares.
For Green Harbor, the Avon Street lot will be chained. On Beach Street, signage will be posted due to a private driveway there. Due to bridge construction, the lobster pound lot is not an issue at this time.
The Rexhame and Dyke Road lots will be blocked off to the public. Jersey barriers will be used to block the lot on Old Beach Road.
The high wall along Brant Rock will remain open.
“The way parking is designed there, people are not opening their doors into each other,” said Tavares. “I believe that should remain open, and people can drive down there and maintain their sanity.”
The beach lot closures in Marshfield go into effect at noon on Saturday.
