Rockland Police have been investigating a hit-and-run crash that left a man with life-threatening injuries. Police Chief John Llewellyn says a tip led them to a vehicle they believe is connected to that incident.
Saturday night, a 43-year-old Rockland man was struck by a vehicle while walking near Market and Howard Streets. Fire Department Lieutenant Dave Cowing said crews were on scene in two to three minutes.
“It was Rockland fire units, ambulance and engine,” said Cowing. “We arrived on scene, determined the patient had life-threatening injuries; multi-system trauma; and we notified MedFlight.”
He says the man was stabilized by the time MedFlight arrived.
In an update to the Selectmen, Chief Llewellyn says the man survived due to the quick work from the fire department and MedFlight. Audio was courtesy of WRPS.
“It’s been a very difficult case because the car took off. As you can imagine, right now at night time there are not a lot of vehicles on the road,” said Llewellyn. “We did tow a truck from Brockton Hospital, brought it back to the station, processed it, and found that it was not in fact the vehicle.”
That vehicle was released, but a breakthrough was made in the case.
“Because of a citizen tip in Rockland, we do believe that we now have the truck in the sally port at the Rockland Police Station,” said Llewellyn.
He says through tireless work from Rockland Police Detectives, they were able to track the vehicle down.
“The detectives have worked approximately 20 of the last 24 hours putting together a search warrant with the State Police,” said Llewellyn. “The search warrant was signed electronically.”
Llewellyn says the vehicle will be examined this morning. Charges could be pending at some point later Wednesday.
