The Hingham Board of Selectmen and School Committee approved a spending plan for the FY 21 budget.
The plan includes a two-tiered control system with monthly and quarterly reviews.
Selectmen Chair Karen Johnson made the presentation at the School Committee meeting Monday.
“I think what we’re trying to do was be fiscally responsible, but really try to minimize the disruption at this point to the FY 21 budget, since we don’t really know where we’re going to be,” said Johnson. “We don’t know the resources we’ll have or won’t have. We’re trying to plan in a very uncertain environment.”
With the uncertainty, she said the Selectmen are planning on using savings to present a balanced budget at Town Meeting, rather than immediately make cuts.
Regular meetings will be held with the Forecast Group, Advisory Committee, and the Selectmen.
“We’re fortunate that in our community, we do have the resources through fund balance to help offset some of these costs coming in,” said School Committee Chair Michelle Ayer. “But also, we need to be mindful that what is being projected today may, and you can probably all guess, will definitely not be what is projected a week from now.”
Ayer said they’re unsure what schools will look like in the fall, so the discussions will continue on managing the process.
The spending plan will be made available on the town of Hingham’s website.
