During Teacher Appreciation week 800 teachers at work teaching 7,500 students remotely.
It’s Teacher Appreciation week 2020, an extraordinary time for teachers who are not in their classrooms, but have had to quickly adapt to a remote teaching model. Plymouth’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gary Maestas told Moderator Steven Triffletti, during the COVID-19 update, broadcast on PACTV, that this is a year teachers will always remember.
Dr. Maestas says he started his career 33 years ago as a teacher:
“I can think back that all the different situations that we had—issues that have gone on in my career, the Oklahoma City bombing to 9/11, for all these different things that have happened, and they’ve shaped our lives in a very significant way and how we handle ourselves in the classroom, and how we deal with this situation.”
But, Maestas says, this week…
“… our teachers will always remember it. For all of the Teacher Appreciation Weeks, it’s a special time. They have been working tirelessly. The virtual learning model is alive and well. Our students are doing the best that they possibly can. Our teachers are just, behind the scenes, just really working diligently and compassionately to try to help our students.”
And, the Superintendent says, it’s not just the everyday classroom work.
“But, it’s just being there for students that need somebody to reach out to because this is a tough time emotionally.”
