May 19th Special Senate Election Could be Postponed, Plan to Vote by Mail Anyway
Update to Story Below:
“The election will occur on May 19th and the Town of Plymouth will participate. I want to thank the Select Board for acting valiantly in trying to do what is right to move it. I am very disappointed in the Senate for not following the request,” said Town Clerk Laurence Pizer.

In Plymouth, the Select Board voted this week to petition Senate President Karen Spilka, requesting that the special Senate election, to fill the seat vacated by Vinny deMacedo, and scheduled for May 19th be postponed until a safer time to hold an election. But, until there is a response from the Senate President, Town Clerk Laurence Pizer tells Moderator Steven Triffletti, during the COVID-19 Update, broadcast on PACT-TV, he has to proceed as if the election will be held as scheduled. Pizer says he cannot emphasize strongly enough that the safest way for voters to participate is to do it by mail:
“They need to transmit a request to us. It can be done by mail: Town Clerk, 26 Court Street or even more quickly, they can do it by email. Write a request, put your name on it, put your address on it, say I’d like a ballot for the May 19th election, sign it and then email it to: rreardon@townhall.plymouth.ma.us
As far as voting in person is concerned, Pizer looks for understanding concerning the difficulties officials are working under:
“We’re going to have gloves, we’re going to have masks and all the protections that we can possible give. We are going to limit the number of people in the polling locations to six at a time, trying to keep groups under 10. That could cause people to have to stand outside and we hope they socially distance if they do.
The Town Clerk requests that you bring your own mask and your own pen even though sanitizing will be done, it’s difficult to ensure the pens for marking ballots will be safe.
