FRRACS Hold Mobile Protest at Compressor Station Site
The Fore River Residents Against the Compressor Station, FRRACS, staged a mobile protest, calling for the stoppage of construction during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Dozens of cars circled Town Hall and the compressor station site with horns blaring.
Alice Arena, the President of FRRACS, said they’ve observed workers not following social distancing guidelines.
“It kind of looks a little funny that the town will not shut them down even though we have picture upon picture of blatant violations,” said Arena. ‘We’re saying ‘why not?’ Why isn’t the Health Department going in there? If it was my construction site, they sure as heck would be in there.”
They want Weymouth and the state to refuse money from Enbridge if strings are attached.
Enbridge spokesman Max Bergeron says they’ve taken extra precautions to protect against COVID-19 such as daily screening of those entering the work site, cleaning work areas, and following social distancing guidelines.
Paul Burwell is a cancer survivor who lives near the site. He’s worried about the health impacts the station would have.
“These big companies, corporations they don’t care about the neighbors, where they live, how the children are living. We can’t even play in the backyard with the kids, they can’t ride their bikes because of all the chemicals and the toxins in the air. It’s just very, very bad,” said Burwell. “It should never happen. Governor Baker says he has compassion for people, he has no compassion whatsoever in the Fore River Basin. He doesn’t even want to talk to us. It’s a sad situation.”
Arena says more information can be found at NoCompressor.com.
