In Plymouth, Sarah Cloud, Director of Social Work at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital told Moderator Steven Triffletti, during his COVID 19 PACTV broadcast, that the ongoing pandemic has caused people to find ways to cope and some of those coping skills can be risky.
Director Cloud say those coping skills that have a negative side effect or…
“…a negative outcome over time, are something we need to pay attention to and maybe make some adjustments. So, drinking alcohol is one of those very popular coping skills. I mean, it’s legal, it socially acceptable, very effective. It’s also progressive and before you know it kind of sneaks up on you.
And Cloud says, it’s also super easy to rationalize:
“Maybe it’s that I’ve worked really hard today. I’m going to have a glass of wine today, maybe with dinner—it helps me relax. I deserve this. I can stop anytime I want to.”
If you’re worried about yourself, or a loved one, Cloud says…
“…please know you’re not alone. There is hope and there’s help in the area. A really popular one is Massachusetts substance abuse help line. It’s at 800-327 -5050.”
